Innovative drivetrain technology
We have developed and tested an innovative drivetrain for wind turbines comprising a medium-speed Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (Brushless DFIG) coupled to a one or two stage gearbox. The Brushless DFIG requires only a fractionally rated frequency converter, typically rated at one third of that of the generator. The key advantages of this drivetrain as compared to conventional ones are the low cost, low maintenance, high reliability and greater compatibility with recent grid codes.
Several prototypes have been built and tested including 7 kW, 20 kW and 250 kW machines. We are currently developing a multi-megawatt system to be tested within a wind turbine in a test field in 2012. If you would like to receive more information about our innovative drivetrain, please contact us.
